Belgian Origins KNPV / Police Sport / FCI Modern K9 1891 #### Belgian Origins Professor Adolphe Reul standardises the four Belgian shepherd varieties at the Cureghem Veterinary School. 1898 #### Club du Chien de Berger Belge The Belgian Shepherd Dog Club is founded in Brussels, formalising the breed standard. 1907 #### KNPV Founded The Dutch Royal Police Dog Association (KNPV) is established — the gold standard for working K9 selection. 1908 #### First Police Deployment Belgian and Dutch police become among the first in the world to deploy Malinois operationally. 1914–18 #### World War I Service Malinois serve as messenger dogs, Red Cross dogs and sentries on the Western Front. 1939–45 #### World War II Malinois again serve on all fronts — messengers, sentries, sappers and Red Cross dogs. 1959 #### AKC Recognition The American Kennel Club recognises the Belgian Malinois as a distinct breed, opening the door to US working programmes. 1970s–80s #### European Sport Lines Emerge Belgian Ring, French Ring, Mondioring and IPO drive the rise of a parallel sport-bred Malinois. 1990s #### US Military Adoption US Special Operations replaces many German Shepherds with Malinois — lighter, faster, more driven. 2011 #### Cairo & Operation Neptune Spear A Belgian Malinois named Cairo accompanies SEAL Team Six on the bin Laden raid — making the breed a household name. The Belgian Malinois takes its name from the city of **Malines** (Mechelen) in northern Belgium. In 1891, Professor Adolphe Reul began standardising the four regional Belgian shepherd varieties — and the short-haired, fawn-coloured dogs working the farms around Malines became the variety we know today. From the beginning, these were **farmers' dogs** — bred for herding, guarding stock, pulling carts, and protecting the family. Function came first. Two distinct breeding traditions produce dogs with very different temperaments and purposes. KNPV-line Malinois are bred specifically to pass an extreme working title that tests apprehension, tracking, obedience and gunfire stability.
