Whether your dog slips their collar or you want to enjoy off-leash adventures, coming when called is non-negotiable. Building this skill requires patience, consistency, and making yourself more interesting than any distraction. Start training in a distraction-free environment. Use a happy, enthusiastic voice and reward generously every single time your dog comes to you. Never call your dog for something unpleasant - this creates negative associations with the recall command. Practice the "name game" - say your dog's name, and when they look at you, immediately reward. This teaches them that their name means "pay attention to me." Once they respond reliably indoors, gradually add distractions: other people, toys, and eventually other dogs. Use a long line (20-30 feet) for outdoor practice. Let your dog explore while dragging the line, then call them back. If they don't respond immediately, gently reel them in without scolding. Reward heavily when they reach you, even if you had to help. Never punish your dog when they finally come to you, even if it took forever. From their perspective, they came back and got punished - not a great incentive to return next time.
