It aids house training, prevents destructive behaviour when unsupervised, and gives your dog a place to decompress. For large, active breeds like GSDs, it's an essential management tool. ## Choosing the Right Crate Select a crate large enough for your adult German Shepherd to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Wire crates offer ventilation and visibility, while plastic crates provide more den-like security. For puppies, use a divider to adjust the space as they grow. ## The Introduction Process Never force your dog into the crate. Start by placing treats inside with the door open. Feed meals in the crate. Gradually increase the time spent inside with the door closed, always associating the crate with positive experiences. ## Common Crate Training Mistakes Never use the crate as punishment. Don't leave your dog crated for excessive periods—adult GSDs shouldn't be crated for more than 4-6 hours during the day.
