German Shepherd Recall Training: Building a Bulletproof Come Command

Develop a reliable recall with your German Shepherd using proven techniques that work even in high-distraction environments.

German Shepherd Recall Training: Building a Bulletproof Come Command

    Why Recall is Non-Negotiable

A solid recall could save your German Shepherd's life. It's the single most important command you can teach, yet it's often the most neglected. German Shepherds have strong prey drive and protective instincts, making reliable recall essential for safe off-leash freedom.

    Building Value in the Command

Your recall word should predict something wonderful. Every time your dog comes when called, reward with high-value treats, play, or praise. Never call your dog to you for something unpleasant like bath time or leaving the park—go and get them instead.

    The Long Line Method

Use a 10-15 metre long line to practise recall in open spaces while maintaining safety. Call your dog, then gently guide them back if they don't respond. Reward generously when they arrive. Gradually increase distance and distractions as reliability improves.

    Proofing Against Distractions

Practise recall around other dogs, wildlife, and exciting smells. Start at a distance where your dog can still focus, then gradually decrease the distance to distractions. A German Shepherd with a proofed recall is a joy to own and a testament to dedicated training.
