Foundation British Field American Working Modern Working 1500s #### St. John's Water Dog On the rocky coast of Newfoundland, fishermen develop a hardy water dog to haul nets and retrieve fish from icy Atlantic waters. 1800s #### Imported to Britain British aristocrats import the St. John's water dog and begin refining it as a dedicated gundog. 1830s #### Earl of Malmesbury The 2nd Earl of Malmesbury establishes a dedicated kennel, naming the dogs 'Labrador' and locking in retrieving traits. 1903 #### UK Kennel Club Recognition The Kennel Club officially recognises the Labrador Retriever.
