Leash Training a Strong German Shepherd: No More Pulling
Learn effective techniques to teach your powerful German Shepherd to walk calmly on leash without pulling or lunging.

Understanding Why They Pull
German Shepherds are powerful, driven dogs. They pull on the leash because they're excited, want to explore, or haven't been taught an alternative. The good news is that with consistent training, even the strongest GSD can become a pleasant walking companion.
Equipment That Helps
Start with a well-fitted flat collar or front-clip harness. Avoid retractable leashes—they teach dogs that pulling extends their range. A standard 1.8-metre leather or biothane leash gives you the best control and communication.
The Stop-and-Go Method
When your dog pulls, stop completely. Wait for them to look back at you or create slack in the leash, then reward and continue walking. This teaches them that pulling stops forward movement while loose-leash walking is rewarded with continued exploration.
Building Duration
Start in low-distraction environments like your backyard. Gradually increase the challenge by practising in more stimulating locations. German Shepherds are intelligent—they'll quickly learn that calm walking earns them the privilege of exploring new environments.
